Separation of the Past and Present Malamuds Integral Use of Setting in The Fixer - Literature Essay Samples

Life is a tragedy full of joy. The view advanced by Bernard Malamud, while somewhat morbid, is mirrored in his lifes work. To express the futility of life in Russia, Malamud creates a setting which seems entirely removed from this century. Through his use of a foreign setting and different time period, he reinforces the confusion and anguish of the protagonist, Yakov Bok. The separation he creates between the present and the past enables Malamud to present a series of events that, were they set in a more current time or place, would be incomprehensible to the reader. By setting his story in Russia during the early twentieth century, Malamud portrays a social and political reality without fighting against the disbelief of his readers.The harsh climate of Russia and the conditions of his confinement continually challenge Yakovs tenacity and will to survive. This natural conflict enhances the central struggle between Yakov and the Russian legal system. During his imprisonment, Yakov c ontends with bone-chilling cold as well as extreme heat. Time was summer now, when the hot cell stank heavily and the walls sweated (215). Against this heat he is provided little protection and no ventilation; even cleanliness becomes impossible to maintain. The winter provides no relief: the acrid cold disheartens Yakov to the same degree as the harsh summer (205). While a small fire is lit twice a day, it can hardly contend with the wind seeping through the split glass that gnaws at Yakovs head and hands (205). All this Yakov must endure without the comfort of a companion to share his hardships. His solitary confinement, complete with shackles, is as trying as the natural forces of weather which he is also fighting. Yakov is stricken to be so absolutely alone and reaches out even to his guards for friendship (215). Even beyond the setting of his solitary confinement, Yakov must fight for his survival in an environment where poisoning is both practiced and acceptable. Poison! My G od, theyre poisoning me! (180). This reality, when exacerbated by the larger issue of inhumane confinement standards and the harsh conditions of Russian weather, creates an overwhelmingly harsh setting that Yakov must conquer. While Russia is a well-known country, the customs and legal system are relative mysteries to many readers of the novel. This mystery adds to the compelling confusion of the novel and emphasizes the point of view Yakov must also share. Initially, Yakov is unaware of the reason for his incarceration, claiming that his supposed crime is a confusion in my mind (73). Because the reader knows nothing more than the prisoner, the reader is dragged through the trials of uncertainty just as Yakov is. In addition to magnifying the insecurity of Yakovs situation, various customs are touched on to add to the atmosphere of the novel. Little examples (such as when Shmuel sucked tea through sugar) are distinctly Russian (9). Other traditions, specifically of the religiou s persuasion, allow Malamud to maintain the thread of Judaism throughout the novel. Although Yakov is not a practicing Jew, phylacteries, prayer shawls, and even matzo bread become crucial aspects of his fight for freedom. The confusion of foreign cultural and religious traditions is accented continually by the legal system of Russia, a mystery to even those who participate actively in it. Yakov is never informed of the status of his case and instead is forced to inwardly wonder what will happen to me now? (96). Because Russia lacks the fundamental systems to protect his rights as a prisoner, however, no answer is forthcoming. Through these varying aspects of Russian and Jewish culture, Malamud creates a setting that adds to the suspense and ultimate tragedy of the novel. Even more important than the physical setting of the novel, however, is the time period in which it takes place. During the early twentieth century, society encouraged racial discrimination against Jews as an accep table way to provide scapegoats and increase unity. Organizations such as the Black Hundreds flourished under the sanctions of the Russian state despite their continual harassment of innocent Jews. Even condemned criminals discriminated against Yakov based on his Jewish heritage. Their taunts-So youre the bastard Jew who killed the Christian boy and sucked the blood out of his bones? and Youre a stinking Jew liar (98, 99)-expose the unsubtle hostility directed towards Jews. While Malamud may interpret historical events in such a way as to increase drama, modern readers find it hard to believe that this level of intolerance would be allowed to occur in the modern day. Naturally, communication is another aspect limited by the time period chosen by Malamud. Unlike today, where something happening on one side of the world is broadcast to the other side of the globe within minutes, the only source of information in Russia was the newspaper, which was often edited. Information only trickl ed out to the public slowly, adding to the suspense and anguish of Yakov and the reader. Even when a clever journalist discovered damaging evidence towards Marfa Golov, the publisher was fined and the press shut down by the police for three months (274). The time period also allows Malamud to show the inhumane treatment of prisoners within state-run institutions. The power of Malamuds portrayal of Yakov stems in large part from the ordeals that he must endure for a crime he did not commit; if those ordeals were made more humane, Yakovs status as a martyr would be lessened. Three times each day Yakov is searched to desperation during a full body cavity search that serves only to torture the prisoner (215). By depicting a world removed from the current time, Malamud can more easily show events that modern times would not allow. The conditions, customs, and historical setting in which Yakov Bok must fight for his life add to the power and suspense of his struggles. By creating a world foreign to the reader, Malamud enrobes the narration in a cloak of mystery and confusion almost impenetrable by the reader. These qualities are responsible for the power and significance of Yakovs struggle. While Malamud may use the setting of The Fixer to evoke the futility of Yakovs tragedy, even this can not prevent the triumph and joy of human determination.

Even if you live in an area with African honeybees – better known as killer bees – the chances of your getting stung are rare. Killer bees sting to defend their nests​ and do so aggressively. If you encounter aggressive bees around a nest or swarm, you are at risk for being stung. Heres what to do if you encounter killer bees: RUN! Seriously, run away from the nest or bees as quickly as you can. Bees use an alarm pheromone to alert other hive members of a threat, so the longer you hang around, the more bees will arrive, ready to sting you.If you have a jacket or anything else with you, use it to cover your head. Protect your eyes and face if at all possible. Of course, dont obstruct your vision if you are running.Get indoors as quickly as possible. If you arent near a building, get inside the nearest car or shed. Close the doors and windows to keep the bees from following you.If no shelter is available, keep running. African honey bees can follow you for as far as a quarter of a mile. If you run far enough, you should be able to lose them.Whatever you do, dont stay still if the bees are stinging you. These arent grizzly bears; they will not stop if you play dead.Dont swat at the bees or wave your arms to fend them off. That will only confirm that you are indeed a threat. Youre likely to be stung even more. Dont jump into a pool or other body of water to avoid the bees. They can and will wait for you to surface, and will sting you as soon as you do. Natasha Bantwal is a basic writer and wrote â€Å"Arguments Against Animal Testing,† arguments opposing the usage of animals for experimentation. A very common argument is that animals are being ‘tortured’ when they are being tested on. Cook approaches the issue quickly stating that â€Å"animal rights activists often demonise scientists, pretending that they are sadists who enjoy torturing animals just for the sake of it. There are countless examples of the lengths to which scientists go to minimize the suffering of animals. But the simple point is that scientists are not sadists: they act in the way that they see fit. † (Cook, 2006) However, the arguments are beyond that. They share two common grounds: animal testing has helped scientifically and medically, and that animal testing has been erroneous. Although Cook and Bantwal agree that animal testing has been helpful, they have different approaches and viewpoints on how helpful it really has been. Cook declares that â€Å"vaccines, antibiotics, transplant surgeries, medical devices†¦ and other developments would not be here today if animal testing ad not been used. † (Cook, 2006) As a counterargument, Bantwal asserts â€Å"the most commonly help perception (or rather misconception) of animal testing is that it is necessary for the development of cures, vaccines, and other treatments for human illness. † (Bantwal) Animal rights activists are attempting to discontinue all animal testings. There have been alternatives reported, bu t none can match as much accuracy and precision as animals would. Bantwal uses cancer as an example of ridding animal testing: â€Å"with countless innocent animals, billions of dollars and more than 30 to 40 years being spent on the war against cancer, one would expect concrete results show up if animal experimentation was actually as effective as it is made out to be†¦ Many cancer funds and organizations have claimed that we are now losing the war against cancer because this animal-based cancer research is failing, and it just downright stinks. † (Bantwal) She implies that animals don’t need to be tested on if they can’t even help to find the cure of big illnesses. Cook, unlike Bantwal, looks at the glass half full. She considers all the drugs that have been animal tested in the past that have been successful, and looks forward to the more cures that will be discovered through this type of experimentation. All cures and vaccines are tested on animals, but are animals a reliable source when it comes to vaccines? Bantwal discusses about the undependable basis of animals’ effect on a particular drug compared to a human’s effect. For example, she pronounces that there has been no progress in the cure for AIDS because animals are incapable of getting the AIDS disease. Cook affirms that testing drugs in animal help researchers find the potential dangers and faults it will achieve, and to understand â€Å"the metabolism of drug compounds and consequent effects seen throughout the body. † (Cook, 2006) She states that the alternatives of animal testing, such as a computer generator, won’t be as sufficient. Bantwal states â€Å"[Pro-Animal Testing] believe that if animal experimentation is stopped, then it will be at the expense of life and the human health. (Bantwal) She tries to compensate that obliterating any and all animal testing will not have a big changed impact in the medical field. She then argues that â€Å"it is dangerous and fraudulent to apply data retrieved from one species to another entirely different species. † (Bantwal) Cook does admit that there have been errors in the field. Both Cook and Bantwal use the Thalidomide as an example of rebuttal. It came out in 1956 as a sedative for pregnant mothers to overcome m orning sickness. It was successful in animal testing, and spread around the world in a few years. Unfortunately, it caused birth defects in the womb. Bantwal quotes ‘safety testing’ and states, â€Å"tens of thousands of children who’s mothers had used this drug were born with severe deformities. † (Bantwal) Cook argues that if they had done more testings on animals, that the birth defect would have been detected. She understands that the scientists messed up because they forgot to test prenatal animals. She attacks the animal rights group with: â€Å"animal rights groups confuse an error resulting from an absence of testing with one resulting from conducting tests on animals. (Cook, 2006) Cook believes that they don’t understand what they are arguing. Their example of the Thalidomide is really suggesting to do more animal testing so then it will be more accurate and precise: â€Å"a few more animals, and countless human lives would have been saved. † (Cook, 2006) Overall, animals are continued being used as experiments for all humansâ₠¬â„¢ health. Lab: Determining What Type of Stimulus Info is More Easily Remembered Abstract A single subject study took place where a male, university student, willingly took part in helping determine what type of stimulus information is more easily remembered. The two types of stimulus introduced were meaningful (CVC) and randomized (CVC). The number of errors made among the two stimuli was also studied. This experiment was done using a computer generated program on verbal learning. Using this program, the subject was presented with seven items of stimuli (CVC) and was to remember what each stimuli was in the correct order. It was found that there are more correct responses when meaningful stimulus is used and the speed of responding to the stimuli is faster when a meaningful CVC is used, rather than in random fashion. Introduction Remembering is the retrieval of information, which is stored in memory. The act of remembering takes place when a correct response is given to a certain stimuli presented. Forgetting is a weakening of this stimulus-response relationship. The Purpose of this experiment is to determine what type of stimulus information is more easily remembered, be it in randomized manner or meaningful. When are more errors made in remembering the stimuli, among these two types of stimuli used (CVC). Also, when a correct response is given, which was the type of stimuli (CVC) that caused this to occur. The design of this experiment on verbal learning has both within-subject and between-subject variables. The within-subject variables are the words (CVC) that are stored in the computer which are the default words to be used. The between-subject variables are the number of stimuli used and the choice of the stimuli using the experimenters own words (CVC). The independent variable for this lab is the number of stimuli presented and the type of stimulus word (CVC) that was used, being both randomized and meaningful. The dependent variables are the number of errors made and the mean correct response latency (speed of responding). Number of errors will be highest in the randomized ordered stimuli, and the speed of responding will be slower in the randomized stimuli condition. Method A single subject, male, twenty years of age in first year of University volunteered to take part in this experiment on Verbal Behaviour. The apparatus used in this experiment was an IBM compatible computer, a monochrome monitor (non-colour), and a Raven dot matrix printer. Running on the IBM compatible was a computer generated program on Verbal Learning from which this experiment originated. Procedure: The first step in this experiment requires that the experimenter get the computer and program ready for the student. The computer, monitor and printer were to be turned on . When the computer was ready and flashing a cursor, Caps Lock was to be pressed, so all letters will be in capital form. The name of the program to be run (VL) was to be typed into the keyboard. When the program had loaded, a menu showed up on the screen, and Verbal Learning (selection 8) was to be run. A timing number was to be keyed into the computer (3.578) and then the Serial Learning feature was to be chosen (option 1). After the above steps, the rest of the experiment was entirely up to the experimenter. After the timing number was entered, the experimenter could either accept the default values for the parameters of the experiment already stored in the computer, or could change any of the parameters. For the first part of the experiment, the number of stimuli was changed (option 1) from ten to seven stimuli. The stimuli (CVC) used in this part of the experiment were in a randomized fashion. Listed below are the parameters for the first part of the experiment and the words (CVC) used : 1) Number Of Stimuli = 7 2) Inter-Trial Interval = 3 sec. 3) Maximum Stimulus Presentation Time = 5 sec. 4) Duration of Correct Answer Display = 5 sec. 5) Completion Criterion = 3 Totally Correct Trials.
