The Advantages Of Stupidity Essays - Intelligence, Stupidity

The Advantages Of Stupidity Essays - Intelligence, Stupidity The Advantages of Stupidity A great many people say being inept will lead no where. They guarantee that it is the most noticeably awful conceivable condition in which to go through one's time on earth, and if conceivable, it ought to be totally evaded. They would even recommend if the manifestations of idiocy are trapped in the beginning times, it could without much of a stretch be rewarded by a specialist. The best technique used to do this is the cutting apparatus strategy, later portrayed in volume two. However, maybe if individuals investigated a few of the focal points ineptitude brought to the table, they wouldn't have such a negative disposition toward it. Subsequent to understanding this paper, one will underezd the upsides of ineptitude. Truly, ineptitude has certain burdens. Life isn't a bowl of fruits. What's more, being moronic doesn't make it any fruitier. Being moronic can disturb even the most touchy individuals. On the off chance that one demonstrations inept, and does it in an inappropriate group, like a gathering of grown-ups, it will appear to be more juvenile than entertaining. On the off chance that one is compelled to act moronic while managing lower living things, for instance, secondary teachers, one may experience hindrances, for example, savagery and lack of care, with the articulation of explanations like, Think with your head straight! or, You have a mind, use it. Yet these are all obvious, there are as yet numerous points of interest to idiocy. The primary bit of leeway is anything but difficult to underezd. Inept individuals are never approached to do a great deal. Many have seen that individuals will in general cow away from somebody they feel might be inept. This is for a generally excellent explanation. The idiocy which they gangs becomes famous, a name which can be hard to shake. Conceivably, it is a word which portrays the working propensities for the individual, for example, bad. However, this makes a positive circumstance for the imbecile. They will have a ton of leisure time on their hands for a greater amount of lifes genuinely significant delights. Some of these exercises are brushing facial hair, and tallying the pixels on a Sony TV. Presently, there has been talk going around that proposes that boneheads have low desires. This is valid. They are inept to such an extent that they try not to acknowledge extraordinary from O.K. They could have a Sanyo cordless telephone, however would likely pick rather a Pierre Cardin morning timer phone, since it comes free with their sensamatic collapsing bed. Furthermore, somebody with the advantage of ineptitude may make some hard memories doing certain assignments, or setting things up. However this isn't all terrible. For instance, if an imbecile leaves the errand, and returns to it later, nobody will have the option to underezd it. Would they land terminated from their position? No. For the very straightforward explanation that nobody would underezd their work aside from for them. The activity would need to be offered back to the inept individual, maybe with a more significant pay, or somebody would do it for them, leaving them with much progressively leisure time! Available time is extraordinary for conceptualizing (Admittedly this appears to be an awful selection of words!). However the thoughts idiots make will in general be unique. For instance, when was the last time somebody inept said something, and made one consider it? It appears that individuals are continually discussing somebody elses moronic thought. A case of such a thought would be, The secret numerous accounts will that english instructor drop before having a stroke? This would propose that blockheads may have the advantage with regards to concocting unique thoughts. In certainty, whenever somebody needs a unique thought for something, they should have a go at conversing with their nearby, network moron. The purpose behind this is while a dumb individual thinks with his head, he doesn't do so a sorted out way. This is the reason they have so much imagination. By thinking in this design, their thoughts have a whiz propensity to stream all the more effectively, without the interferences which happen from the altering of considerations that legitimate individuals would have typically. Along these lines in the event that another person should state to one, That was a moronic thought! one ought to simply look that individual straight in the eye, and state, Thank-you! This too implies that the case, Inept

Answers: 1.General Economic Coniditions In The U S Macroeconomy The financial state of the United States has outfitted after the finish of the Second World War. The time has been from there on viewed as the Golden Era for the economy of United States. In the each circle whether is it fabricating division or the administration part, the nation has conveyed the colossal development till 1970s however after that for certain years stagflation has come yet by the 1980s and onwards the nation has had the option to convey the uncommon development and has raised the rush of the opposition over the world all inclusive. Separated of having the difficulties in every manners at the nearby level, the economy of the United States is still viewed as the biggest economy and is considered as the most significant economy over the world. A similar certainty is additionally certified when the Recession of the year 2008 in the United States has smashed the market all inclusive and no business had the option to make due around then. The nation has the most noteworthy per capital Gross Domestic Product adding up to 57,436 USD per individual as on the year finishing 2,000 and sixteen (OECD, 2017). Alongside the high per capita Gross Domestic Product, the nation has been confronting challenge of current record shortage. This present record shortage is significantly a result of installments made to outsiders are in abundance of the receipts from the outsiders. This shortage was countered by the capital record surplus which was accomplished by the receipts from abroad for the capital record exchanges. US roughly got 80% of FDI and that also originates from significantly nine nations and along these lines finds support to set of thee current record shortage. Along these lines, the monetary state of United States is testing however it is outfitting on year on year premise. Starting with incredible blast and afterward running over the extraordinary sadness time frame and afterward again having the time of increased birth rates age, the United States is presently the one of biggest nation having the economies of scale. 2.Discussion On Analysis Of Economic Conditions And Risk The United States has qualities just as shortcomings in practically all circles of economy. The qualities are United States is the universes biggest economy, it has the framework where there are appropriate Governmental checks, it has conveyed the high per capital Gross Domestic item, the nation has been the main in giving the information full straightforwardness and the money of the nation is solid when contrasted with others. Aside from the previously mentioned qualities the nation has the shortcomings likewise like the nation has been confronting the basic joblessness, the Tax rate for the corporate is a lot higher because of which the exposure of income is a lot lesser in genuine or genuine terms, the constant shortfalls in the present record parity of the nation has been winning, the methodologies and approaches embraced by the Federal Reserve Bank is inflexible and the nation has been confronting the absence of talented laborers because of which the profitability has been made lower in the genuine terms. According to the current monetary condition that is winning after the arrangement of Donald Trump, the nation has been confronting different dangers. One of the significant dangers that the corporate including the little and medium undertakings are confronting is that the assessment change has been kept in pipeline as opposed to executing the equivalent at the soonest. The significant assessment change was to diminish the expense rate and according to the present situation, the nation has question that a similar will be actualized in the year 2018 or not. Second significant hazard that the nation is confronting is from Federal Reserve Bank whose choice is to diminish their monetary record by expanding the financing costs on long haul premise. This will give the significant effect not in the time of 2017 however in the time of 2018 (Coface, 2017). 3.Recommendation For Allocation Of $1,000,000 Among Three Asset Classes There are three resources classes US Equities, US Treasury Bonds and Cash. US Equities are portions of the organization and the holder of the US values will convey the democratic right in the event that it is regular stock and on the off chance that he is the holder of favored stock then he will get the inclination profit. US Treasury bonds are the bonds which entitle the holder the option to get enthusiasm till the time sum is progressed to the organization and the organization doesn't reimburse the bond. Money incorporates the money and money counterparts including the Treasury bill and authentications of stores. Despite the fact that treasury bills are charge sparing, however these protections convey less financing cost. In the given case, the financial specialist has $1,000,000 and so as to include the better return inside a year dependent on the current monetary states of the United States, the speculator will receive the accompanying ideal allotment: $5,00,000 in the US Equities $2,50,000 in the US Bonds $2, 50,000 in the Cash and money counterparts (OECD, 2017). Sociological Perspectives of Violence

The focal point of this paper is a diagram of various research articles on prejudice and auxiliary brutality against the native. Savagery will be taken a gander at from three schools of contemplations to be specific the auxiliary, clash and procedure speculations. The perspectives on these various ways to deal with savagery will be fundamentally dissected, yet no worth decisions will be set on any of their impression of viciousness. Bigotry According to Headley (2000), prejudice is â€Å"the punishment of inconsistent thought, propelled by the longing to rule, in light of race alone (p. 23). Headley further clarifies that this definition suits the qualification between â€Å"true racism† which is the craving to hurt or overwhelm others exclusively based on race, and â€Å"ordinary racism† which he sees as all inclusive highlights of human science (p. 224). Headley further kept up that a supremacist isn't only somebody who wishes to put down another’s  race, y et in addition smother and state his/her own predominance through a fierce demonstration (p. 224).Naiman (2006) characterizes prejudice as antagonistic vibe, animosity, and threat toward non-individuals from a specific gathering dependent on their physical qualities, quite skin shading (p. 265). So also, Spencer (1998) considers bigotry to be â€Å"the change of race preference and/or ethnocentrism through the activity of intensity against a racial gathering characterized as second rate, by individual and institution† (p. 1). To surmise from the previous definitions, a typical quality of prejudice is the conviction that one’s own race is better than another. This conviction depends on the wrong presumption that physical properties of individuals from a racial gathering decide their social conduct just as their mental and scholarly attributes (Spencer, 1998, p. 5). Chronicled Roots of Racism. The term bigotry became advanced in the late 1960’s during the social li berties development (Headley, 2000, p. 235). Before this time as per Headley, the term ethnic partiality was utilized (p. 236). Naiman (2006) places that prejudice is a moderately late wonder, and its rise as an efficient world-see grew simultaneously with the ascent of entrepreneur and its worldwide development (p. 66) Naiman further clarifies  that a few researchers characterize types of  social prejudice preceding this industrialist period as bigotry, yet he anyway contends that such social narrow mindedness is all the more accurately observed as ethnocentrism (inclination for one’s own social customs) or ethnic pettiness (enmity towards a specific gathering) (p. 267).Racism in Canada According to Naiman (2006), a few Canadians like to accept that bigotry is a generally late marvel connected to present day migration examples or contrasted with United States, Canada has little history of plain prejudice (p. 69). Naiman, nonetheless, contends that prejudice in Canada h as a long and corrupt past, which in all actuality as depicted by him â€Å" is an unattractive history cleared under the frayed mat of its national myths† (p. 269). Naiman further kept up that the historical backdrop of bigotry in Canada starts with the oppression of Canada’s native individuals. Savagery Anglin (1998), states that an uncontroversial, thorough and exact meaning of viciousness is hard to track down. â€Å"Violence is comprehended as an occurrence in which an acting individual purposefully harms another† (p. 146).Anglin further clarifies that the activity of the culprit can be physical, or mental. In same vein, Steinmetz (1989) characterizes brutal as â€Å"an act did with the intension of, or saw as having the intension of genuinely harming another person†. Strasburg (1978) characterizes savagery as â€Å"illegal use or danger of power against a person†. From the prior, it tends to be gather that savage conduct implies physical powe r applied to damage or manhandling. There are three key terms which are probably going to be available for any activity to be named a fierce act.The activity must be deliberate, power might be applied and the activity must bring about damage (physical, mental and passionate). Human conduct doesn't happen in disengagement or in vacuum yet it is impacted by the interaction of numerous different components. Therefore, various schools of considerations about viciousness, see any savage go about as an antecedent of different variables. For instance, the Conflict, Structural, and Process hypotheses. Strife hypothesis Conflict hypothesis is better comprehended as the Marxist hypothesis. As indicated by the hypothesis, â€Å"Crime is seen as a component of rivalry for restricted resources†.That is, a societal position wherein an individual is seen assessed and treated likewise by lawful specialists. The Marxist view is that contention between these class-based social pecking orders, those who are well off (bourgeoisie), and has not (low class) that produces vicious conduct. As per Holmes (1988), the distinction between these two classes involves relative force . Holmes further clarifies that the decision class have adequate force thus, they can name some proletariat’s conduct as criminal Structural theoryThe basic hypothesis then again, sees viciousness from the view of social powers or neighborhood conditions. That is, our conduct is a result of our condition. The world we live in, shapes our lives. Since our condition isn't static, our conduct rotates around this dynamism. The basic methodology holds the view that the manner in which certain things are organized by the general public makes brutal acts. For instance, think about the film Elephant; the auxiliary hypothesis will contend that it is a direct result of the manner in which society is organized, that individuals can secure weapons to sustain violence.Similarly, heterogeneity of society inalien ably makes savagery. This is on the grounds that as indicated by the hypothesis, there will undoubtedly be such issues as social or strict clashes because of these distinctions. Procedure hypothesis According to the advocate of this hypothesis, wrongdoing is a component of socialization and childhood. Reprobate conduct is found out like each other conduct through relationship with noteworthy others and reference gatherings, particularly guardians and friends. It is through perception and association with these huge others; we learn strategies for participating in reprobate acts.According to Process hypothesis, all types of brutal acts are found out through impersonation and perception. For instance in the film Elephant, the Process hypothesis contends that the two sequential executioners learned such rough acts using savage PC games and impersonation of the Nazi’s pioneer, Hitler. The contention progressed by these various ways of thinking seems persuading, in light of the fa ct that viciousness in the public arena can be clarified through every one of these methodologies. When these ways of thinking are seen basically, there has all the earmarks of being an examining question that should be answered.Among every one of these speculations which contributes more to brutality in the public eye? Thinking about the significance of every one of these ways of thinking, it will be troublesome if not difficult to satisfactorily clarify brutality from the impression of one of these methodologies. This is genuine in light of the fact that every one of these methodologies interchange to impact one’s conduct contingent upon the circumstance. For instance, utilizing the film Elephant, the Process Theory will contend that the sequential executioners took in their obnoxious demonstration through viewing  vicious computer games (perception) their endeavor to mimic Nazi’s pioneer Hitler was the forerunner of their actions. On the other hand, the Structural Theory will contend that it is a direct result of the manner in which society is organized that the sequential executioners had the option gained weapons to propagate their demonstrations. Thus, if society is organized so that getting brutal PC games are practically difficult to get, maybe the executioners probably won't have the option to secure such weaponry or learn fierce conduct. In same vein, the Conflict Approach says the force battle between the decision class and the common laborers makes unevenness family structure, which they guarantee brought about poor parental upbringing. This brings about brutal acts in light of the fact that the youngsters are not appropriately provided food for. The Role and Effect of the broad communications on Violence Research on media impact in viciousness has been worried about conceivable negative impacts of introduction to fierce movies. What messages, for instance do youngsters detract from their introduction to different vicious motion pict ures? As indicated by the Observational Learning Theory Bandura, et al, in their Bobo doll study refered to in Holmes (1988), clarifies that the media urges kids to tackle their issues by rough methods; they further keep up that consistent introduction to brutality standardizes viciousness (p. 100).Critics of the Bobo doll explore have called attention to that the doll was the kind of toy that welcomed animosity, and furthermore since the filmstrip utilized in the analysis came up short on a plot, it contained no legitimization for the savagery of kids. .Different researchers like Alfred Hitchcock’s as refered to in Holmes (1988) contends that following the immediate impacts of the media is an exceptionally troublesome assignment. The explanation behind this as indicated by him is that when the media works in the indigenous habitat, their impact is just one factor among numerous different variables; this is on the grounds that what they see and hear is doubtlessly observed by their folks (p. 8). Hitchcock further clarifies that in any event, when kids are presented to vicious motion pictures through the media, this savage demonstration is additionally fortified if the parent’s, themselves likewise takes part in any types of savagery. The media reflects about each part of a general public; these reflections are not really exact. This is on the grounds that savagery isn't precisely spoken to by the media. The news media specifically, gives a significant discussion where vicious acts are specifically gotten together, contributed with a more extensive importance, and made accessible to open cons

Exploration of Brain Processes in Reading

Investigation of Brain Processes in Reading Studies into the human comprehension of perusing will in general utilize Experimental Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience and Cognitive Neuropsychology approaches for growing further information on the procedures associated with the perusing of language. The test intellectual brain research approach structures lab trials to uncover the procedures which are engaged with the human perception being inquired about. The analyses are viewed as a logical method of looking into, as they are profoundly controlled. (Eysenck and Keane 2010) Using this methodology in understanding the procedures of perusing, includes the utilization of specific errands so as to consider these procedures. The intellectual neuroscience approach includes serious concentrating of the cerebrum and conduct. Because of advances in innovation, there are currently a wide range of procedures accessible for examining the mind. These strategies get point by point data about the manner in which the cerebrum capacities and its structure. From these methods analysts can work out where and when in the mind explicit subjective procedures happen, just as decide the request in which parts of the cerebrum become dynamic when an individual plays out an undertaking. Analysts can likewise see if undertakings include similar pieces of the cerebrum similarly, and build up if there are any significant contrasts in the pieces of the mind utilized. (Eysenck and Keane 2010) Subjective Neuropsychology takes a gander at the examples of intellectual execution appeared by mind †harmed patients, as should be obvious us a ton about human insight. For instance, Epelbaum et al (2008 as refered to by Cummine, Dai, Borowsky, Gould, Rollans and Boliek 2013) watched a patient who had created unadulterated alexia; this is the capacity to perform letter by letter perusing, however not entire word perusing. The patient created alexia following a little careful injury which harmed the left inside longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) simply behind the putative visual word structure zone (VWFA). Hanley and McDonnel (1997 as refered to by Eysenck and Keane 2010) considered Patient PS, who comprehended the significance of words when perusing, yet couldn't articulate them. From this examination it was proposed that phonological handling is gotten to after word meaning when perusing. In any case, there are issues with utilizing this way to deal with clarifying perusing and the procedures which are included, as some of the time the effect of cerebrum harm on intellectual exhibitions might be disguised on the grounds that patients can create compensatory techniques. Reicher (1969 as refered to by Eysenck and Keane 2010) considered the word predominance impact, by quickly introducing a letter string followed by an example cover, members at that point needed to choose which letter was in a specific position. Reciher found that participant’s execution was better when the letter string framed a word. Rayner and Sereno (1994 as refered to by Eysenck and Keane 2010) considered word acknowledgment to survey whether this was programmed or not, they found the Stroop impact, this is the point at which a shading for example ‘Orange’ is imprinted in an alternate shading for example Red, they discovered members set aside more effort to reply than when the shading was imprinted in either a similar shading textual style or just in dark, proposing that we are not intentionally mindful of word acknowledgment. Rastle and Brysbaert (2006 as refered to by Eysenck and Keane 2010) did a meta-investigation of different investigations of members finishing lexical choice and naming undertakings. From the examination it was discovered that when words were gone before by primes like them as far as phonology they were prepared quicker than those words like them regarding spelling. These discoveries propose that phonological preparing happens naturally and quickly. Yates (2005 as refered to by Eysenck and Keane 2010) utilized both lexical dynamic and naming assignments inside their exploration, to help the suspicion that phonological preparing is utilized in visual handling. Yates’s look into found that inside both of these errands, when words which have numerous phonological neighbors (words which vary in one syllable from one another) are focused on for less time than those with less phonological neighbors. There are various issues and confinements inside the trial subjective brain research approach. Frequently, the psychological errands include the utilization of a mind boggling blend of various procedures and it is difficult to decipher the discoveries, for instance, the Stroop Effect referenced above, it is hard to decipher what procedures are effectively associated with deciphering the shade of the word and understanding it. Regularly the manner in which the examinations are controlled can confine how naturally legitimate they are, for instance in the lexical choice errands members need to choose if a series of letters frames a word and in the naming undertakings they need to as fast as conceivable articulate outwardly introduced words. Inside these assignments ordinary perusing times of members are disturbed by the necessity to react to the errand, in this manner can the outcomes be summed up to reality and the more extensive populace? Likewise, as both of the assignments, are not undertakings we frequently participate in when perusing regularly, this can likewise affect on how consistent with genuine the outcomes are. There are additionally gives when deciphering the assignment execution results, as it gives us backhanded proof about the interior procedures associated with the discernment of perusing, and it is hard to choose at what time forms happen, regardless of whether they are simultaneously, with some cover, or at various occasions. For instance, in Rastle and Brysbaert’s study it is uncertain from the outcomes whether phonological preparing happens before word importance is gotten to. Be that as it may, this can frequently be explained by utilizing cerebrum imaging strategies. Khateb and Annoni et al (1999) recorded occasion related possibilities (ERP’s) during a semantic and a phonological perusing assignment to decide the timespan when semantic and phonological handling start to distinctively actuate the neuronal language organize in the mind. From the outcomes the specialists found that these distinctions didn't fundamentally happen. Occasion related possibilities are connected to the utilization of EEG which depends on accounts of electrical mind action estimated at the outside of the scalp; ERP is a method of settling one of the impediments of the EEG strategy. ERP includes introducing a similar upgrade to members a few times, as this purposes any unconstrained or foundation mind action from clouding the effect of the preparing of the improvement on the account. ERP’s have various qualities as far as their commitments towards investigate. They give great transient goals, can show when a given procedure happened to inside a couple of milliseconds, for example in Khateb, Annoni et al’s study the distinction between actuation of semantic and phonological preparing was uniquely for 100 milliseconds. This procedure likewise gives itemized data about the time course of cerebrum movement, contrasted with a ton of different strategies. Be that as it may, the strategy doesn't unequivocally show which local es of the mind are generally engaged with handling. Cao, Bitan and Booth (2008) utilized powerful easygoing displaying (DCM) and MRI to inspect the successful network between three locales in the left half of the globe of the cerebrum in youngsters with and without perusing troubles while finishing a rhyming judgment task. The scientists found that the modulatory impact from the left fusiform gyrus to one side substandard parietal lobule was more fragile in kids with perusing troubles while finishing the clashing preliminaries of the rhyming judgment task (where the words had either comparable orthography however unique phonology, or had distinctive orthography and phonology). Another finding is that the modulatory impact from the left fusiform gyrus to the sub-par frontal gyrus was essentially more noteworthy in clashing preliminaries than non †clashing preliminaries in the youngsters in the benchmark group; nonetheless, this was not clear in the kids with understanding troubles. The last finding was that the modulatory impact f rom the left substandard frontal gyrus to one side second rate parietal flap and the bidirectional modulatory impacts between the left sub-par parietal lobule and average frontal gyrus were emphatically corresponded with perusing abilities in the benchmark group of youngsters as it were. X-ray enlightens us concerning the structure of the cerebrum by utilizing radio waves to energize molecules in the mind, which produces attractive changes which are identified by an enormous magnet; these progressions are then deciphered by a PC and changed into an exceptionally exact 3d picture. In any case, as most psychological therapists wish to take a gander at the elements of the cerebrum instead of the structure, MRI can be a restricted procedure to utilize when contemplating human comprehensions. This can be settled however by utilizing the fMRI procedure which takes a gander at the elements of the cerebrum. Meyler and Keller et al (2007) utilized fMRI to inspect cerebrum action during a visual sentence perception task among poor and high capacity perusers. Meyler and Keller et al utilized a more significant level understanding errand so as to develop past research which found a decreased or missing initiation in the left parietotemporal and occipitotemporal cortices in people who experience the ill effects of dyslexia or have a low understanding capacity. The outcomes structure Meyer et al’s explore found that poor perusing capacity was related with diminished actuation in those regions contrasted with those of higher understanding capacity. There was likewise a positive direct connection between understanding capacity and cortical actuation in Wernicke’s region, the correct mediocre parietal lobule, and the left post focal gyrus. Mechelli and Crinion et al (2005) utilizing fMRI needed to expand on the hypothesis that perusers utilize word explicit information and general data about how a mix of words compares to phonological portrayals by investigating how neuronal collaboration

OMG SNOW

OMG SNOW (To be serious for a moment here I really love comments and emails, as long as they in some way have to do with MIT. If youre an 11, Id love to talk to you about whatever, because youre now affiliated with MIT, and that makes you totally awesome. But if youre still waiting for a decision, or you havent even applied, Id prefer if you stuck to comments or emailed me questions only regarding MIT. Im sorry, it just makes me uncomfortable to be Facebook friends with so many people I dont know. This doesnt mean youre not totally awesome too! But if we get to be best friends and you dont end up getting accepted, its not going to end well. And I dont want that! Its not you, its me. Thanks, dudes. Now back to the regularly scheduled entry. Separation of the Past and Present Malamuds Integral Use of Setting in The Fixer - Literature Essay Samples

Life is a tragedy full of joy. The view advanced by Bernard Malamud, while somewhat morbid, is mirrored in his lifes work. To express the futility of life in Russia, Malamud creates a setting which seems entirely removed from this century. Through his use of a foreign setting and different time period, he reinforces the confusion and anguish of the protagonist, Yakov Bok. The separation he creates between the present and the past enables Malamud to present a series of events that, were they set in a more current time or place, would be incomprehensible to the reader. By setting his story in Russia during the early twentieth century, Malamud portrays a social and political reality without fighting against the disbelief of his readers. The harsh climate of Russia and the conditions of his confinement continually challenge Yakovs tenacity and will to survive. This natural conflict enhances the central struggle between Yakov and the Russian legal system. During his imprisonment, Yakov c ontends with bone-chilling cold as well as extreme heat. Time was summer now, when the hot cell stank heavily and the walls sweated (215). Against this heat he is provided little protection and no ventilation; even cleanliness becomes impossible to maintain. The winter provides no relief: the acrid cold disheartens Yakov to the same degree as the harsh summer (205). While a small fire is lit twice a day, it can hardly contend with the wind seeping through the split glass that gnaws at Yakovs head and hands (205). All this Yakov must endure without the comfort of a companion to share his hardships. His solitary confinement, complete with shackles, is as trying as the natural forces of weather which he is also fighting. Yakov is stricken to be so absolutely alone and reaches out even to his guards for friendship (215). Even beyond the setting of his solitary confinement, Yakov must fight for his survival in an environment where poisoning is both practiced and acceptable. Poison! My G od, theyre poisoning me! (180). This reality, when exacerbated by the larger issue of inhumane confinement standards and the harsh conditions of Russian weather, creates an overwhelmingly harsh setting that Yakov must conquer. While Russia is a well-known country, the customs and legal system are relative mysteries to many readers of the novel. This mystery adds to the compelling confusion of the novel and emphasizes the point of view Yakov must also share. Initially, Yakov is unaware of the reason for his incarceration, claiming that his supposed crime is a confusion in my mind (73). Because the reader knows nothing more than the prisoner, the reader is dragged through the trials of uncertainty just as Yakov is. In addition to magnifying the insecurity of Yakovs situation, various customs are touched on to add to the atmosphere of the novel. Little examples (such as when Shmuel sucked tea through sugar) are distinctly Russian (9). Other traditions, specifically of the religiou s persuasion, allow Malamud to maintain the thread of Judaism throughout the novel. Although Yakov is not a practicing Jew, phylacteries, prayer shawls, and even matzo bread become crucial aspects of his fight for freedom. The confusion of foreign cultural and religious traditions is accented continually by the legal system of Russia, a mystery to even those who participate actively in it. Yakov is never informed of the status of his case and instead is forced to inwardly wonder what will happen to me now? (96). Because Russia lacks the fundamental systems to protect his rights as a prisoner, however, no answer is forthcoming. Through these varying aspects of Russian and Jewish culture, Malamud creates a setting that adds to the suspense and ultimate tragedy of the novel. Even more important than the physical setting of the novel, however, is the time period in which it takes place. During the early twentieth century, society encouraged racial discrimination against Jews as an accep table way to provide scapegoats and increase unity. Organizations such as the Black Hundreds flourished under the sanctions of the Russian state despite their continual harassment of innocent Jews. Even condemned criminals discriminated against Yakov based on his Jewish heritage. Their taunts-So youre the bastard Jew who killed the Christian boy and sucked the blood out of his bones? and Youre a stinking Jew liar (98, 99)-expose the unsubtle hostility directed towards Jews. While Malamud may interpret historical events in such a way as to increase drama, modern readers find it hard to believe that this level of intolerance would be allowed to occur in the modern day. Naturally, communication is another aspect limited by the time period chosen by Malamud. Unlike today, where something happening on one side of the world is broadcast to the other side of the globe within minutes, the only source of information in Russia was the newspaper, which was often edited. Information only trickl ed out to the public slowly, adding to the suspense and anguish of Yakov and the reader. Even when a clever journalist discovered damaging evidence towards Marfa Golov, the publisher was fined and the press shut down by the police for three months (274). The time period also allows Malamud to show the inhumane treatment of prisoners within state-run institutions. The power of Malamuds portrayal of Yakov stems in large part from the ordeals that he must endure for a crime he did not commit; if those ordeals were made more humane, Yakovs status as a martyr would be lessened. Three times each day Yakov is searched to desperation during a full body cavity search that serves only to torture the prisoner (215). By depicting a world removed from the current time, Malamud can more easily show events that modern times would not allow. The conditions, customs, and historical setting in which Yakov Bok must fight for his life add to the power and suspense of his struggles. By creating a world foreign to the reader, Malamud enrobes the narration in a cloak of mystery and confusion almost impenetrable by the reader. These qualities are responsible for the power and significance of Yakovs struggle. While Malamud may use the setting of The Fixer to evoke the futility of Yakovs tragedy, even this can not prevent the triumph and joy of human determination.

What To Do If You Encounter Killer Bees

Even if you live in an area with African honeybees – better known as killer bees – the chances of your getting stung are rare. Killer bees dont look for victims to sting, and swarms of killer bees arent hiding in the trees just waiting for you to wander by so they can attack. Killer bees sting to defend their nests and do so aggressively. If you encounter aggressive bees around a nest or swarm, you are at risk for being stung. Heres what to do if you encounter killer bees: RUN! Seriously, run away from the nest or bees as quickly as you can. Bees use an alarm pheromone to alert other hive members of a threat, so the longer you hang around, the more bees will arrive, ready to sting you.If you have a jacket or anything else with you, use it to cover your head. Protect your eyes and face if at all possible. Of course, dont obstruct your vision if you are running.Get indoors as quickly as possible. If you arent near a building, get inside the nearest car or shed. Close the doors and windows to keep the bees from following you.If no shelter is available, keep running. African honey bees can follow you for as far as a quarter of a mile. If you run far enough, you should be able to lose them.Whatever you do, dont stay still if the bees are stinging you. These arent grizzly bears; they will not stop if you play dead.Dont swat at the bees or wave your arms to fend them off. That will only confirm that you are indeed a threat. Youre likely to be stung even more. Dont jump into a pool or other body of water to avoid the bees. They can and will wait for you to surface, and will sting you as soon as you do. You cant hold your breath long enough to wait them out, trust me.If someone else is being stung by killer bees and cannot run away, cover them with anything you can find. Do what you can to quickly cover any exposed skin or susceptible areas of their body, and then run for help as fast as you can. Once you are in a safe place, use a blunt object to scrape any stingers out of your skin. When an African honey bee stings, the stinger is pulled from its abdomen along with the venom sac, which can keep pumping venom into your body. The sooner you remove the stingers, the less venom will enter your system. If you were stung just once or a few times, treat the stings as you would regular bee stings and carefully monitor yourself for any unusual reactions. Wash the sting sites with soap and water to avoid infections. Use ice packs to reduce swelling and pain. Of course, if you are allergic to bee venom, seek medical attention immediately. If you suffered multiple stings, seek medical attention immediately.
